How deep education is rooted and how many percentages of people are educated in a country defines the strength of that country and Jordan is not exception to this. The level of education in a country also signifies the characteristics of governments both present and past. The records of educational developments in Jordan are quite impressive. Literacy rate is high, approximately 89 percent.
The government of Jordan invests 13% of public expenditures on elementary and secondary education. The enrollment in elementary education classes is close to 90 percent, and 70% for the secondary education classes. Girls comprises of 55% of secondary education population.
The education system in Jordan consists of
- two year cycle of pre school education,
- ten years of compulsory basic education, and
- two years of secondary education (academic / vocational)
At the end of secondary education years students write General Certificate of Secondary Education Exam- Tawjihi.
University education is available to those who have successfully completed secondary education. Students may chose to join a public community college, private community college or a private / public university. Vocational subjects are offered into community colleges, access to which is open to all pupils holding any type of general secondary education certificate.
